4 Helpful Resources If Dry Eyes Are Affecting Your Everyday Life

By Baptist Eye Surgeons - Dry Eyes,Knoxville Eye Care

dry eyesA recent article in Ophthalmology Times highlights the prevalence of dry eye syndrome, and that it has a substantial negative impact on those affected. In fact, approximately 16 million Americans have been diagnosed with dry eye syndrome, while there are still many others who suffer from troublesome dry eye symptoms that have not yet been diagnosed by an eye doctor.

Dry eye symptoms often include any or all of the following:

  • A burning (or “dried out”) sensation in the eyes
  • Eye grittiness or stinging
  • Watery eyes
  • Red or irritated eyes
  • Pain when wearing contacts
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Blurred or fluctuating vision

How Do Eye Doctors Diagnose Dry Eye Syndrome?

By Baptist Eye Surgeons - Dry Eyes,Knoxville Eye Care

Dry eye syndrome is a common condition, especially as we age. When the quantity or quality of our tears aren’t able to adequately lubricate our eyes, we can experience the uncomfortable symptoms of dry eyes on a chronic basis. Symptoms often include:

  • A gritty sensation in your eyes
  • Stinging or burning
  • Redness or irritation
  • Blurry vision
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Pain when wearing contact lenses

While it may seem easy to self-diagnose chronic dry eyes and just buy over-the-counter eye drops for temporary relief, you could be doing yourself a real disservice by doing so. Using non-prescribed eye drops for a long period of time isn’t recommended, and it’s also important to understand the cause of your dry eyes in order to find the safest and most effective treatment for a long-term solution. What Is Diabetic Retinopathy, And Can It Be Cured

By Baptist Eye Surgeons - Dry Eyes,Knoxville Eye Care

Diabetes is on the rise in the U.S., and diabetic eye disease is a leading cause of blindness. Over time, high blood sugar levels damage blood vessels throughout the body, including those within the eyes. Diabetic retinopathy is the condition that occurs when the blood vessels in the retina become damaged from diabetes. If not detected in the early stages, diabetic retinopathy can cause permanent vision loss or even blindness.

The disease usually affects both eyes and there are two types of diabetic retinopathy—background retinopathy, also known as non-proliferative retinopathy, and proliferative retinopathy. With background diabetic retinopathy, blood vessels in the retina rupture, which puts you at risk of serious risk of vision loss. When the retina begins to lose enough blood, your body will try to grow new blood vessels on the retina to replace the ruptured vessels. This is considered proliferative diabetic eye disease, which is much more likely to result in permanent vision loss.

By Baptist Eye Surgeons - Diabetes,Dry Eyes,Eye Abnormalities,Eye Infection,Glaucoma,Knoxville Eye Care,Macular Degeneration

Comprehensive Eye ExamDetecting eye diseases as early as possible gives you the best chance of saving your sight. Some of the most common eye diseases can blind you before you ever notice the first symptoms.

The American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends that you get a comprehensive eye examination at age 40, which is when changes in your vision or early signs of disease typically begin. A comprehensive screening, which includes dilating the eyes, can help identify signs of eye disease at an early stage. Continue to have a comprehensive eye exam at least every two years after age 40, and at least once a year after age 50. (more…)

By Baptist Eye Surgeons - Dry Eyes

You’ve probably seen a commercial for chronic dry eyes at least once in your life and if you remember Bill Stein from the 1990’s you’ll know exactly what we mean. While his eye drop commercials were quite humorous, anyone living with chronic dry eyes knows the opposite is true.
